How to Organize Your Home - 4 Essential Tips

How many times have you promised yourself you would organize your home, but became discouraged at how much time and effort it would take? You’re surrounded by things you know need to be organized, but the task seems so daunting that it feels useless to even start. You’ll wait later, you tell yourself, when you have more time and can clean up everything all at once.

Meanwhile, the clutter piles up, and you become more and more reluctant to ever start.

Does this sound like you?

I know where you’re coming from. I am a terrible pack rat, but at the same time I am very affected by my environment. When I’m in a clean, well-organized, decluttered space, I feel energized and peaceful. When I’m in a messy, cluttered room, I feel stressed and on edge. Having a well-organized space is a key part of having peace of mind.

How did I go from being a pack rat to living in a well-organized space? Well, I worked in several NYC offices and studio spaces over the past year. Part of my duties was organization. And in NYC, you're very tight on space. I had to help organize very small, cramp spaces, and organize the most disorderly and dirty areas.

Those experiences taught me a great deal about how to get organized. The most important thing to remember is this: It isn’t as hard as you think!

These are some fundamental, sure-fire steps that have helped me and the offices I’ve worked in to declutter our spaces:

1. Start small. I cannot stress this enough – even if it is the smallest, most seemingly insignificant thing – such as picking up some loose paper off the floor, or putting that salt shaker in a cabinet – the most important thing is to simply start. Starting is definitely the most difficult part of decluttering.

2. Decide how you want the room to make you feel. Go to the entrance or a corner of the room and take a look at your surroundings. What do you see that you would like to change? How do you want to feel when you walk in? Really consider how you would like to use the room and how you want the room to make you feel.

3. Don’t be afraid to make big changes to a room. One of the most important things I learned while I was working in one of the offices was how, in order to make the room organized, we would often have to make the room messier first. This can be counter-intuitive, but it is definitely the most productive way to declutter.

For example, in one small office, we had this three-level shelf that reached the ceiling. Each shelf was a nightmare – full of old papers, handwritten notes, dusty yellowed newspaper articles – plus heavy, obsolete audio equipment – all covered in dust and grime. It was filthy!

But we were able to clean it quickly and productively. The key was to take everything off the shelves, throw away what we didn’t need, and then replace only the items on the shelves we needed. The rest went into storage.

Everything was now well organized and clean, and we all felt better about the space.

4. Don’t get discouraged. You don’t have to declutter all at once. Don't be hard on yourself. Focus on how much you've done, not how much you have to do.

You now have learned some quick, easy tips on how to better organize and declutter your home. Just remember: 1. Start small, 2. Decide how you want the room to make you feel, 3. Don't be afraid to make big changes to the room to organize, 4. Don't get discouraged.

Good luck with decluttering your room!
